Memorial Happenings


The Fruit of Disaster

At around 10:30 AM on March 1, 2023, a cup of peaches was thrown and stepped on near table 12 in the Cafetorium of MMMS during the lunch period of quad 7G, creating a hazard zone. 


"The cup was thrown from table 10," says a witness from the far end of table 12. "The cup landed on table 12, slid, and landed on the area of floor next to the table. A minute later, the cup was voluntarily stepped on and dragged, creating a smear of peach juice and pieces on the ground." 


Afterwards, a custodian arrived and mopped up the mess, leaving no trace of the hazard behind. However, authorities are still unsure as to the identity of the people responsible for this school crime.


"The culprit of the throwing was likely sitting on the end or middle of table 10 or 8," adds the witness. "The smearer, I think, was a student from the middle of table 8."


But, no matter the cause of the crime, this brief event should be a chance for students to consider their actions and practice self-control and honesty.

Why Halloween is Not Good in the Modern Day (In my opinion)

Reader discretion is advised, and any resemblance to other writing pieces is purely coincidental, as no sources were consented for this writing, besides brainpower. Thank you.

There was a time when we all believed that Halloween was a day for free candy and/or presents, but then the question spills into our heads: what do we give back? Nothing. What was Halloween for? And most importantly, what is the legal status of going trick-or-treating, whether in costumes or without, and what about the TP-ing people's houses?

Originally, this accursed holiday (Halloween) was started as the Celtic festival of Samhain on the first of November, and it was a day to celebrate the dead. Goblins and ghosts were said to lurk, and to keep them at bay, on the evening right before, they left out freshly made food. It was only later when beggars and burglars realized that they could freely take food without getting caught in the act, and even when the Romans and later Christians made the festival on November 1st meant to remember saints, the traditions of the day before stayed and people's fears of ghosts and goblins and witches never went away. In fact, people began carving leftover food in faces to deter burglars, but nothing could stop them. Thus began trick-or-treating as we know it now.

If the holiday was meant for burglars, is it not an insult to the hungry people of America? And still, if we were to trick-or-treat, wouldn't it still be illegal? What about haunted stuff? That is fine, because it does not have much (if any) modernization, besides some exaggeration. The original beliefs were of primitive forms of what we put in haunted houses today. What about costumes? Beggars and burglars used to dress up like these monsters of the night to trick the house owners and law enforcement, but nowadays, the old tradition has been exaggerated and made "kid-friendly" and "appropriate" to the point where it doesn't have the same ring to it anymore.

That is not all that is really messed up about trick-or-treating. Putting aside tradition and the unfair mocking of the poor, I can confidently say that it is also a waste of time and money. It takes much more time and effort to go to others' homes to get candy, while candy has already been placed for others outside your own house. Additionally, according to a study I ran within my family that went trick-or-treating, the amount of candy brought back in a basket or pillowcase while trick-or-treating is on average less than the amount of candy that could be found in a large bag of Halloween candy from Costco. Logically, people should just buy a bag of candy and enjoy it, like we do on Christmas, or even gift it to others, rather than going from house to house and begging for sweets, snacks and candy, and then making others face consequences if you don't get the sweets.

Put in a simple tone, Halloween is cursed for a ton of reasons. There isn't that much more to say, besides the obvious facts that costumes are exaggerated and made too "kid-friendly" and "appropriate", and that the idea of trick-or-treating itself is literally criminal art form. However, haunted houses are the only things that manage to follow the original traditions almost exactly, but due to the exaggeration of other parts of the holiday, even they should not be kept. To summarize, it is not a good idea to participate in Halloween, trick-or-treating or any related activities. It is a waste of time and money!



6th Grade Struggles!

Fifth grade was a blast, with numerous parties, snacktime, and way more amenities that come with this year of school. Even though 6th graders enjoy this new chapter of their life, there are still an innumerable number of activities that we miss. Also, sixth grade comes with the same number of opportunities yet struggles, which is difficult for us to navigate being enveloped into a whole new world of kids.  


According to a former fifth grader by the name of Gabriella Prince, sixth grade is a bit hectic and full of chaos. Her original quote states, ”At sixth period, I am always late to class because I have lunch and then I have to go all the way across the school. Don’t even mention going to my locker after lunch with the enormous crowd that hoards the hallways.” As already assumed, sixth graders are always late to class because the system is completely new.   


Another obstacle faced by the overwhelmed grade is the colossal amount of homework given by different teachers. Compared to elementary school where a large quantity of free time was issued, middle school seems to side with the contrary. Now, 6th graders have to learn how to balance their time effectively and find a comfortable transfer between extracurricular activities and school. 


With middle school, one of the more exciting amenities include the stress of not walking in lines anymore. 6th graders feel like their own person due to this added benefit and are free to walk without accidentally clipping another student’s foot while getting from class to class. There are many more benefits, such as sports and clubs but this one is certainly the 6th graders’ favorite.  

So bring on the struggle!

Frankenstein's Mistake - Part the First


1 My dear Margaret, one day I did see

Upon my journey of discovery

To the north where seas are cold

And fame resides, as I've been told

A man bitten with fatigue and hate

Who wished for me to know his fate


2 I took him in and listened near,

For I hoped to write to you, my dear

And tell of the story that he had told

With words that he'd shaped of purest gold

Peanut the Mouse

Mother looked me in the eye, “Peanut, why did you run off again? It worries me when I see you’re not in your bed sleeping with your brothers and sisters. I told you that last time, didn’t I? And I do believe the time before that. Eat your nuts and go play in the burrow, but don’t go out until I tell you that you can. It’s a dangerous world out there, Peanut, especially for the smallest mouse no one has ever met.”


Once she was done with her lecture, I limped off. My leg was still badly cut from last night when it rubbed against a twig.


My sister, Hazelnut, walked over, “Peanut! What happened to your poor leg?” she gasped when she saw my huge cut, “Oh no! You didn’t sneak out again, did you?”


I made my best ‘I’m innocent’ look, but to no avail.


“Peanut, you could get hurt!” Hazel sighed,“C’mon. The other mice are playing with the gnawing blocks in the other room. It’ll be fun.”


I knew I should go. I loved to gnaw on the blocks, but I wanted to go back outside more. “Sorry. I’m going out again,” I stared at the floor. I would play with them next time. I just had to feel the cold air on my back again, to pad through the snow without a care in the world.


Hazel looked at me hopefully and excitedly said, “Can you take me, then?”.


I considered it for a minute, “Sure! Just whatever you do, don’t tell.”


We quietly went through the emergency exit of the burrow and into the snow.


“Ahh!” Hazel jumped back, a shocked look took over her face,“Cold!”


I nodded, “It’s snow!”


We giggled and played and walked for hours, not realizing darkness was falling.


“Peanut! The sky! It’s black!” Hazel cried.


I laughed, “Don’t worry, that means it’s late. We should head back.”


Hazel sighed, “You just finished telling me about the snakes and bobcats that live here. Let’s not go until morning.”


My stomach grumbled, but I had never needed to find food out in the woods. Luckily, my nose caught the smell of a nearby blackberry bush, somehow holding on to a few mushy berries, and so we ate. After that, we burrowed into the snow and fell asleep, wondering what mother would think when we returned.


I opened my eyes and waited to hear the other mice squeaking, but then I remembered it would only be Hazel. We were cuddled together for warmth, and we were both hungry again. The bush was now empty, and every other nut or berry would be buried in the snow.


“Let’s get back, we can eat there,” I said, not knowing what else to do at that point. Hazel nodded, and sighed.


“Do you feel that?” she asked.


“That wind?”


“Yeah, the wind,” she clarified, “is that what the wind feels like?”


“No, this actually feels different,” I realized suddenly. But I had no idea what was different about the wind.


“What’s going on?” It wasn’t Hazel’s voice, and I definitely hadn’t said it. Then I noticed a rat coming toward us, full speed.


“Run!” I cried to Hazel. “Run!”


My paws skidded across the snow, trying to escape before the rat got us.


“No! No!” she cried. “Please stay. I’m scared.”


I turned my head. The gray rat had stopped running, and was staring at us. I looked into her eyes and realized she couldn’t be much older than the two of us.


“You’re alone?” I asked, at that moment feeling sorry for the young rat.


“Yeah, I’m lost, and I’m scared, and that wind. I’m Amber. What are your names?”


‘I’m Hazel, and this is Peanut,” Hazel introduced us sympathetically.


“We’re lost too. We ran away,” I added.


“I did too!” Amber seemed excited. “Can we go together to figure out more about the wind?”


I shivered, and not because I was freezing. The wind was dangerous. What if something happened to us and we never returned? The mere thought was scary.


Amber smiled. “Let’s go!”


I ran through the snow, trying to catch up with Amber and Hazel, before collapsing onto the snow. It was late, and we should have just gone to sleep. “So . . . tired,” I moaned.


I focused on keeping my eyes open, but they betrayed me. The last thing I saw was the sunrise before I fell asleep.


When I woke up a while later, and was still alone. Maybe they were looking for me. Or maybe they’d just left me behind. I rose to my feet and tiptoed through the fresh fallen snow. The morning sky was oddly clear, for a snowy winter. I decided not to pay attention. I didn’t know why I was tiptoeing. For some reason the moment just felt eerie. “Amber! Hazel!” I cried. No answer. Nothing to do but walk farther.


The sun moved to the middle of the sky. Noon. Where were they? The day wore on, and I was still alone. And I didn’t think I could move an inch further. But I powered on.


Night fell again, and I burrowed under some snow and closed my eyes.


I woke up to the wind. Why could I feel the wind from so far underground? I scurried through the opening of my tunnel, well rested and ready to find something to eat. But where? The wind blew again, and my stomach twisted into a knot. As it blew, I could hear branches dancing above me, and I turned around. Very low on the bark was a tiny but tasty looking spider. I reached up and snatched it, eating it quickly. Not enough to fill me up, of course, but it can sustain me for a little while, enough to look for my friends.


I ran for a while, when I looked behind me. “Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!” I cried, picking up speed, for behind me was the largest snake I’d ever seen (and the first one).


“PEANUT!!!!!” two voices screamed at once.


I called back. We had a quick reunion, before running off again, and Amber started humming. We all joined in. All of the sudden, the wind blew again, followed by cracking. I looked behind me, nearly jumped out of my skin. There, a tree sat, cracking open slowly, until it snapped in two. Was the wind really strong enough to snap something in two? In between the two pieces, a yellow-eyed brown owl stood, blinking every few seconds.


The owl rolled his eyes. “Ugh,” he muttered, “The wind shouldn’t have broken the entire tree.”


Hazel backed away, along with Amber, but I swallowed hard and stepped forward. “Excuse me, uh, Mr. Owl -”


“Call me Merlin,” the owl interrupted. “Continue.”


I sighed. “We came to investigate the wind.”


“Of course you did.” Merlin rolled his eyes again. “Why can’t I just manipulate the world in peace?”


Amber slowly went next to me. “Well?” she smirked.


The owl grumbled. “I just wanted to have some fun.”


And with that, he flew away, into the distance, and I could feel the magic wind ruffling my fur, and I realized we would never find out why he would do that, why he would scare the entire woods. We all turned around and walked away, ready to come back home.

I fell asleep in my home for the first time in forever. My mother had cooked celebratory blackberry muffins, and so my stomach was full. Amber and Hazel slept by my side, but so did Mother and all my brothers and sisters. Sometimes you don’t realize how much you missed someone until they’re right back at your side.

The Hunt

Silence.


Then, a lone leaf, falling down, down, crisp and golden, fluttering down through the ember beams of autumn sunlight, down onto the reddest of floors in the woods.

Silence, yet again.

And in the silence, was heard the remote and individual sound of hunting boots crunching the leaves to a pulp, and the twang of a bowstring released.

The arrow flew. And made its mark.




Robin Hood grasped the arrow and pulled it clean from the evergreen sapling's bark.

"They're onto us, fellows," quoth Robin to little John without turning around, inspecting the arrow closely. "From the looks of it they've been here…two days ago." 

Rubbing his chilled hands together, little John stepped up behind Robin.

"Now, if they're onto us, we'd just better call the bet off," little John trembled agitatedly. "It wasn't good sport from the beginning, if you ask me. Just a load of shovin' around one's confidence and saying proud things. Nah, we better have just stayed in dear Sherwood. I hear the foliage has started to come in nicely," he added.

"No, little John," Robin spoke sternly, putting the goose shaft into his own quiver. "We mustn't break our vow. We've still got a week to find the golden egg, and I can almost sense it at my fingertips. Little John, do you realize how much it would mean to find that golden egg? It's a fortune! It's much more valuable than a simple meal and a lively jest. It's even better than a jolly time at the Blue Boar! It's the future! It's bright and it can be gone any minute!"

"But still," little John said uneasily, turning around slowly, "I have the feelin' that not everything we know about this contest is true. And I always just think they're around the corner, ready to snatch the thing once we've uncovered it!"

"At ease, little John," Robin said reassuringly, finally turning to face little John. "It'll all be fine, it's a game, isn't it, nobody'll get hurt, nobody'll—"

A gleaming shaft of dark wood hurtled past Robin's nose, just brushing it, and stuck itself five inches deep in the nearest tree.

"RUN!" yelled Robin and little John in unison, ducking and leaping away just as another flurry of arrows flew over their heads.

"After them!" shouted a cloaked figure to two large, angry hounds, coming out from behind a tree nearly ten yards away.

"RUFF RUFF RUFF!" barked the dogs, chasing the two yeomen through the woods.

"Have you still got some of that potion?" asked Robin, panting, the woods becoming a blur before his tearing eyes.

"Yes, just enough," panted little John, pouring some into his mouth. Robin snatched the bottle from little John and swallowed the rest of it just as the dogs were about to bite their feet.

But the hounds were too late, for what they had counted on for being in their jaws at around this time had vanished into the still morning air.


When the two dogs returned to their master empty-mouthed, his eyes turned to fire and smoldered with hate.

"I came close today. But they still escaped. I know that soon, they will not be so lucky," he snarled, his words like knives. "Now, hounds, we have business with the king!"

They left, their nine feet resounding into the distance on the wrinkled forest floor.



~ The Party ~

*disclaimer, this is fiction*



On one foggy day, Joe hosted a massive party. Everyone in the neighborhood was coming, but something happened during the celebration: The house mysteriously went into flames.

A massive mob of the partiers busted out of the door as the fire raged on.  Soon, the firefighters came to the rescue. The firefighters poured water on the fire. 

After the fire was put out, the fire fighters inspected the remains of the house and saw a candle that was burned in the upstairs bathroom. Soon, they realized that someone dropped the candle on purpose. The survivors were questioned. The police suspected that there was an argument in the second bathroom upstairs.


John said, “I was having a good time 'til I saw fire from upstairs.”  

“Who was upstairs before the fire?” said the

 police.

“I don't know. Me and my friends were talking and I was not paying attention.”

Soon the police went to question the people that survived.


John's friend said, “What?!?! He is lying. We had an argument for five minutes straight. He is lying to you, I think he started the fire.”


Soon a bunch of other people were questioned. 


Joe said sadly, “I don't know what happened, I was talking to a bunch of people, saying thank you,then all of a sudden a fire broke out. Who would do such a thing?”



Ryan said, “Look, I was in the upstairs bathroom with Jacky. After I used it, there were flames surrounding me. Jacky sadly died in the flames. ”



Sam said, “I was playing darts till a random person said fire. Soon, I ran outside and saw the flames.”



James said nervously, “I was upstairs and saw Andy holding the candle. Then I walked to another bathroom and Jacky and Ryan were there. There were lots of screams coming out. I just left. I was watching Youtube videos till a huge fire came out of nowhere. I almost died if it wasn't for the fireman.” 




Andy said “I was in the bathroom, but I never caused the flames, even though I was holding a candle.”



Soon the police found out that it was Ryan who started the fire. Why?


It turns out that Ryan and Jacky were having an argument and he was so enraged he threw a candle on the floor, which caused the fire.


Evidence:

Jacky and Ryan were in the second bathroom, James said  "I walked to ANOTHER bathroom and Jacky and Ryan were there.¨ Andy was in the first bathroom not the second. 


Epilogue: After the horrific truth of what Ryan did, he was sentenced for life in prison. But on June 1 2020, he escaped and ran into market town. The police pursued him but lost him. Detective, you caught Ryan so you can catch him again. Come on, let's gather info. Remember some store keepers might be lying so make sure not to be fooled.

The Chase

      It was a cool, brisk night and there wasn’t a star in the sky. I sat down next to the trunk of an old oak tree. There were no leaves on the trees, and there was fog everywhere. You couldn’t hear anything except the sound of the howling wind. It felt as though there was no signs of life for miles. The ground was cold and the bark of the tree felt rough. 

     As I was lying hopelessly on the hard ground I heard something rustling in the bushes. I slowly got up and moved toward the sound.  As I was walking toward the bushes I heard the sound again. I moved closer and I heard some chirping as well. It was like the thing that was making this sound was crying in pain.  I gently put my hand on the bristly old bush and moved both sides of the bush apart to see what was making this sound. As I looked inside the bush I saw a small helpless bird.  This bird only had one leg. What was left of the other leg was a bloody stud.

     I slowly put my hands around the small bird and picked it up.  The bird let out one last chirp and then it disappeared into thin air. It was like the bird had disintegrated and floated away.  Soon after the bird disappeared I heard a howling noise. I looked around me slowly  spinning in circles. I heard this howling noise again but this time there were more of them. Then I saw two bright yellowish dots in the trees,  when I  looked a little closer I soon realized those two bright yellowish dots were a pair of eyes.  I took a step back, and then those eyes came closer and closer until I saw a creature. This creature looked like a wolf but none that I have ever seen before. This creature's fur was a jagged blue gray and its tail was pointed like an iceberg. Right behind this beast 4 more bright yellow eyes emerged from the trees. They got closer and closer just like the first creature and they were all staring at me like I was there for the next meal.  

     I took a step backward again when I heard a SNAP! I slowly turned around and looked at the ground covered in brown and orange leaves. I had stepped on a tree branch. The wolves ran toward me and I ran as fast as I could all the way back to the old oak tree. As they kept getting closer I heard the sound of the dead leaves crunching underneath my feet. I could hear the sounds of the wolves' heavy breathing. It was too late, I felt the wolf's fangs sink into my skin. All of a sudden I felt light headed. Everything was blurry, my surroundings were spinning around in circles. The spinning got faster and faster until I dropped to the cold hard ground.  All of a sudden I saw a peak of light shining through the treetops. I was lying on the ground in the middle of the forest. My muscles were too weak to move, but I somehow managed to sit up. Something felt different, I looked at my leg and the bite mark was completely gone.

      My wrist felt like it was burning, and when I looked there was a bright purple vein branching out and slowly spreading up my arm. About five minutes later, it spread all over my body. I felt like I was on fire! Finally, the vein stopped spreading, I didn’t feel anything anymore. My muscles didn’t feel weak and I wasn’t cold but I wasn't burning either. I felt strong, but I also felt aggressive.  I suddenly realized how thirsty I was so I looked around for water. And before I knew what I was doing I bent down to drink from a puddle. But something else caught my attention. It was a pair of yellow eyes staring back at me. And I realized it was my own reflection.


Our Broken Planet

This is not something we can throw out the door.

Caused by us humans

Deforestation is a problem that is obvious and clear

Leaving no homes for animals so they must disappear

Trees provide things like medicine

Over lumbering takes away supplies of goods like resin

Poverty has affected people in almost every place

It’s not something we can immediately erase

In this world having no money is not so good

Some people even have only a little bit of food

Now, that’s enough of talking about all our problems

We need to do something to stop life from harming

Although we can use some scientific explanations

No one can sit and just live with relaxation

Everyone has a part in this great movement

Sitting down and not helping is something that you shouldn’t

Doing is the only way to help our broken planet

Working together is a great way to make it happen.

Working together has helped in many occasions

Working together will help in future situations

Working together is helping the current generations

Working together can strengthen our relations

Working together is a great way to get through bumps in the road

Minecraft Horror Story: The Rise of Herobrine

    One day in another normal world in Minecraft, Steve and his friend Alex were mining and starting to build their house. While Alex was mining, Steve found the perfect spot to build their house. However, it wasn’t perfect in the slightest bit. What Steve and Alex didn’t know was there was a vindicator mansion close by. But, there was also a village nearby which was great for supplies. The village and mansion however were in a serious conflict making it hazardous to be anywhere nearby. Of course, Steve didn’t know this so he set up camp next to the village. When Alex returned she noticed that the villagers were in constant hiding and seemed to be on guard all the time.


    After building a decent house, Steve decided that he would go collect materials. Later on while gathering materials, Steve found himself cornered by vindicators. He saw that one vindicator had a rusted ax and he had to be careful of that. Thankfully, a scout group of villagers came and killed them, however one villager was infected by the rust from the ax. All the villagers decided to finish the villager off before he would infect everybody. But something stopped them…Steve spotted something in the forest, but it was unclear due to the fog. It had glowing white eyes and it had a blue shirt. Or at least that’s what Steve thought.


    That night, Steve fell asleep in a villager’s house in exchange for help in the war. He agreed and the next day went to Alex and told her all the news. She was shocked but understood the circumstances. They decided to bring more villagers from their village to help fight against the vindicators.


    The next time Steve and Alex went over to the village they saw a sight that truly horrified them. The entire village was burned down. . . Steve could see what happened on the battlefield. All wildlife was dead, like the crops or animals. When Steve and Alex went further to investigate what happened, they only found one villager left. He explained that a monster came and kidnapped most of the villagers, while many soldiers perished on the battlefield. The villager was panting, so Steve and Alex assumed that the attack happened recently. Alex asked what the monster looked like. He said that the monster looked like Steve except with glowing eyes. As Steve listened he knew that it was the same beast he saw glaring at him in the forest. Alex knew that this monster was no ordinary one. She knew that it was Herobrine…and he was back!


    Steve, Alex, and their new villager friend, went back to their newly built home. They got prepared for a fight and were constantly on guard. They knew that Herobrine was way too powerful. They would have to get way more help than they had. Their only option was to get help from the vindicators. At this thought, they hesitated but knew it was the right thing to do. So the next day they set foot for the vindicators’ mansion. The vindicators knew a lot about Herobrine and knew that he was a big threat. So despite their differences, they teamed up against Herobrine. A week later, everything was peaceful and everybody was on guard. Until, CRASH! BOOM! Herobrine was attacking!


    That was the moment where everything went wrong for Herobrine. He was blinded by his self conscience and ran in without planning anything. Steve was expecting this. He came up right behind him and stabbed in his chest with a diamond sword. Everybody cheered and celebrated. From that day on, the day Herobrine was killed is the day the biggest celebration is held each year. Everybody knew that Herobrine was dead, which made most people happy, but some were angry and might just bring him back…


                  Who Pulled the Fire Alarm

It was a normal day in Memorial Middle school. There was no sight      of kids in the hallway. Every kid was in their class. Until...BEEP, BEEP, BEEP. The fire alarm went off. Everybody thought it was a drill so they did not think too much of it. Soon, everybody was outside of the building. After everybody lined up, the principal gave shocking news. He announced that, apparently, the fire alarm was not a drill, but there wasn’t a real fire either. Everyone was shocked. 

“Then who pulled the fire alarm?” asked Mrs. George in a confused voice.

“I don't know, but we will figure it out,” declared the principal.


Five days had passed since the false fire alarm. The school still didn't know who did it. 


“What can we do?'' said the principal in despair. 


Mrs. Villani came up with a genius idea and said, “Maybe we could hire a detective to interrogate the students.” 


“Good idea, let's do it,” the principal agreed.


The next day, all of the teachers were instructed to bring the students to the cafeteria.  When every single student came to the cafeteria, the detective came out and started pulling out students for questioning. One by one each student was questioned. It took the whole school time for the interrogation to finish. The next day the detective came to the principal to give his information. 


“I suspect ten kids have done the crime of pulling the alarm,” claimed the detective.


“Thank you,” said the principal. A week later, the ten kids were pulled to the office and were interrogated.


“One of you pulled the fire alarm. Give me information, starting with Mike!” said the principal. 


Mike said, “I left science class to leave the bathroom. When I entered I saw John in the bathroom.” 


John said, “I saw Mike in the bathroom, but when he entered he immediately left. I was confused, then the fire alarm went off.”


Noah said, “I was sleeping through Mrs. Villani’s class until I had to go to the bathroom. After I was done, I saw someone pull down the alarm. I couldn't see who it was clearly because I forgot my glasses at Mrs. Villani’s class.”


Susan said, “I was delivering a letter to Mr. Osborne until I saw Noah and someone else that I forgot.”


Rome said, “I was walking in the hallways. Then I saw Michel near the fire alarm. It might be him.”


Michel said, “I was texting my mom until I saw Rome, but when I left, he went right to the fire alarm. I think it was Rome.”


Mia said, “I really have nothing to say. I can say that I was at student services and was really bored.”


Emma said, “I think I saw Rome pull the fire alarm!“

 

Gable said, “I was confused. I was just at my locker and then the alarm went off.”


Juno said, “It can't be Rome because it has to be Michel. He is trying to frame Rome!”


Now detective, who do you choose? The person who pulled the fire alarm was Mike.The reason why it was Mike was John's reason.  He said “I saw Mike in the bathroom but when he entered he immediately left, I felt suspicious. Then the fire alarm went off.”  After Mike left the bathroom he immediately went to the fire alarm. So that is why Mike pulled the fire alarm.

Why Bing is Better than Google Eshaan Patel Which search engine do you happen to be a fan of? I, personally, use Bing for all my web searching needs. Although the vast majority of people will choose to search with Google, there are a ton of reasons why Bing is objectively better. For example, Bing pays you for each search you make, and it shows information in a very different, yet visually appealing way. To begin with the obvious, Bing pays you for searching and one's overall use of the search engine. The program is called Microsoft Rewards. When you search, you get awarded 3 points. Each point is worth about one tenth of a US cent ($0.001). Additionally, these points can also be earned by getting correct answers on Bing's FrontPage quizzes. Next, the points can also be redeemed for donations to nonprofit organizations, such as charities. Finally, one can redeem the points for gift cards at many stores, including Amazon. Effectively, you would be receiving free stuff. Just note that it cannot replace actually having a job because in total, over 3 years of using Bing, I have only earned $62.27, which is far below minimum wage. Eluding to another topic, Bing uses a much more visually appealing way to display results to its users. For example, the results page is slightly more grey. This allows for the website itself to strain one's eye much less. In addition, the bar on the right side shows some results, some fun facts about what the searched terms were, some recent searches, many images, a large map, and links to many related websites. On the central side, a highlighted result and then some more results appear. Finally, on the left side, some quick information about the first result is shown, while the rest is empty. This is unlike Google, which chooses to show news and then information, showing how Bing shows information more straightly and more to-the-point.

Battle Cats

Battle Cats is a fairly popular game created by PONOS, a company located in Japan. Today, this game will be broken down.

To start, Battle Cats is a game with cats where you battle other countries with animal warriors. In the beginning of the game, you have one cat, the basic cat. With this basic cat, you have to battle in Korea first. You will be battling a new enemy, the Doge. To spawn basic cats, you must earn cents, which you slowly gain during a fight. This is different from cat food, which is the in-game currency, along with XP, which is used to upgrade cats. If your cats defeat the enemies quicker than they spawn, your cats will reach the enemy base. This base will have a certain amount of health that increases each level. Once your cats defeat the base, you defeat the level. However, if the enemies reach your base, they can defeat it and you will lose. After you defeat Korea, you will unlock the following levels. Some levels introduce new enemies. For example, Madagascar introduces the Gory, which is a gorilla enemy. Most times, a new enemy will cause a knockback wave, which knocks back your cats. However, if you defeat the enemy, you can continue on to the other weaker enemies and defeat them. After you defeat more and more bases, you will eventually reach The Moon. This level introduces a bigger and stronger boss. It also has more health than other bases. You can defeat the fairly strong enemies in the beginning, but if you attack the base enough, a boss will spawn. The first Moon’s boss is The Face.

Now to talk about more features. After you defeat the first moon, you will unlock a second chapter of this. You will battle the same enemies, but they will be stronger. The second boss is Dark Emperor Nyandam. After you defeat the second moon, the third and final chapter is unlocked. The boss in this is the notorious Teacher Bun-Bun. Once you defeat a chapter, you can redo all the stages, except most enemies will become zombies. Also, after defeating Greece, you unlock Gamatoto. He goes on expeditions of your chosen length (1 hr, 3 hrs, or 6 hrs) and brings back cat food, XP, and sometimes other things. Later, you can also unlock engineers. These cats can upgrade your base with items you get from Legend Stages, which will be addressed now. Along with defeating the first moon, you will unlock things such as the Catclaw Dojo, Into the Future, and Legend Stages. Legend Stages are stages you complete to earn items and XP. Into the Future has the same enemies, but they are all aliens. Aliens are more powerful than their normal counterparts. There are many types of enemies. This includes traitless (of course), alien (which we just mentioned), red, floating, metal, angel, zombie, black, aku, and relic. They all have their own ability. Metals can only be damaged a lot by critical hits, and every other hit does one damage. Blacks are really fast. Zombies have to be killed multiple times to fully die. Moving on, after you defeat the first chapter of Into the Future, you unlock Cats of the Cosmos, which introduces starred aliens. They are more powerful aliens that can warp your cats back to your base. This makes Cats of the Cosmos really difficult, unless you have the right cats. Now let’s get on to the cats!

In the game, there are over 700 different types of cats. You can evolve your cats with XP, which you earn from defeating any stage. Some cats have effects and are also good against certain enemies. There are also different rarities of cats. The higher the rarity, the more the cat costs and the more powerful it is. The current cat rankings are Normal (you get these from defeating stages in the first chapter), Special (you get some of these from defeating entire chapters or buying them with cat food), Rare, Super Rare, Uber Super Rare, and Legend Rare. The final four rarities can be obtained by opening rare cat capsules. The in-game currency, cat food, is something that is also very useful. You can use it to buy special cats, buy rare cat tickets, and more!

In all, Battle Cats is a fun game that many, including me, would approve of and recommend. This mobile game can help you pass time if you are bored and is really great to play. There is also another app that you can download to get rewards for it, along with the daily and holiday rewards that the game already comes with. It is completely free to download with in-game purchases. So, overall this is a cost-free (if you want it to be) game that is amusing to play.

Game Review: Tetris

Tetris is one of the most popular games today. Although it was released in 1984, many people still consider it very addictive to play. Originally created by Soviet software engineer Alexey Pajitnov, Tetris remains the first falling block puzzle game and has entertained hundreds of millions of people worldwide for decades.

Tetris, overall, is a really fun game. Its game play is a very simple concept, which is easy for many to wrap their heads around. This is one reason why it is so popular. The idea is to get blocks to fall in a row. The more rows you complete, the more points you get. When you complete a row, it gives you points and disappears. All the blocks above it then fall down due to the gravity physics in the game. You must try to make as many rows as possible, because when the blocks reach the top of the screen, you lose. The blocks can only be moved while they are falling. Once they touch the bottom, or another block, they cannot be moved. To move the blocks into an ideal position, you can rotate the blocks or move them from side to side. The blocks are four small squares rearranged into many shapes. There is the I-block, O-block, J-block, L-block, S-block, T-block, and Z-block. The I-block is four squares in a straight line. The O-block is a cluster of the four squares forming one bigger square. The J-block is the block that has three of the squares in a row down, and then a block to the left that is attached to the bottom of the three blocks. It is rather hard to explain what the blocks look like, so you can do research on them in your own time.

Anyways, Tetris is a great game. I would recommend it to anyone looking to pass some time. It is really fun to play, but in my opinion, it can get repetitive and boring. While many think that it is addictive and people can’t put it down, it is quite the opposite for me. I would play for 10 minutes or less, and then I would get bored. However, this is just my viewpoint on Tetris and many think that I am underestimating the popular falling block game. In the end, everyone does have their own perspective on games.

HeeJin, HyunJin, HaSeul, YeoJin, ViVi, Kim Lip, JinSoul, Choerry, Yves, Chuu, Go Won, and Olivia Hye are all members of the Kpop group LOONA. This group is different from many others due to its unique name, members/group formation, music and dance, and multitude of accomplishments. Its Korean name is Idalui Sonyeo, meaning “Girl of the Month,” and is often shortened to Dalso. Its English name was created by taking the first consonants of its Korean name, or, “In other words, ㅇㄷㅇㅅㄴ is rearranged to ㄴㅇㅇㄷㅅ, which then becomes LOOΠΔ,” (Fandom).


The reason why LOONA is known as “Girl of the Month” is because each of the 12 members debuted during a different month of the year. Additionally, every member debuted with at least two songs, except HeeJin, and the next tracks often featured the member who came before, or even multiple members.


HeeJin was the first member to debut with the song ‘ViVid’ on October 5, 2016. The next member revealed was HyunJin on November 17 with ‘Around You’ and ‘I’ll Be There’ featuring HeeJin. Then it was HaSeul, the leader of LOONA, on December 5 with ‘Let Me In’ and 'The Carol' featuring HeeJin and HyunJin. Next, on January 16, 2017, was YeoJin with ‘Kiss later’, ‘My Sunday' sung by HeeJin and HyunJin, and ‘My Melody’ featuring HaSeul. ViVi came next on April 17 with ‘Everyday I Love you’ featuring HaSeul and ‘Everyday I Need You’ featuring JinSoul, who wasn’t yet revealed at the time.


Even before ViVis debut, the first LOONA subunit was created on March 13, 2017; LOONA ⅓. This featured HeeJin, HyunJin, HaSeul, and ViVi, but not Yeojin due to unknown reasons. Their first EP, Love & Live, included the songs ‘Into the New Heart’, ‘Love & Live', ‘You and Me Together', ‘Fairy Tale’, and ‘Valentine Girl’. Their second, and final, repackage album included the previous songs plus three new ones; ‘Love & Evil’, ‘Sonatine’, and ‘Rain 51db’.


After ⅓, Kim Lip debuted with ‘Eclipse’ and ‘Twilight’ on May 23, 2017. Next, JinSoul finally debuted on June 26 with ‘Singing in the Rain’ and ‘Love Letter’ featuring Kim Lip. Choerry then debuted with ‘Love Cherry Motion’ and ‘Puzzle’ featuring JinSoul on July 28.


Kim Lip, JinSoul, and Choerry came together to form the subunit LOONA / ODD EYE CIRCLE. They first released the EP Mix & Match on September 21, 2017 with the songs ‘ODD’, ‘Girl Front’, ‘LOONATIC’, ‘Chaotic’, and ‘Starlight’. Additionally, on October 23, they also put out the song ‘LOONATIC - Eng. Ver’. Finally, their repackage album Max & Match, released on October 31, 2017, featured the new songs ‘ADD’, ‘Sweet Crazy Love’, and ‘Uncover’, as well as past songs.


The first of the last 4 members was Yves, on November 28, 2017, with the songs ‘new’ and ‘D-1’. After Yves, ‘The Carol 2.0’ sung by ViVi, Choerry, and Yves, was released on December 13, 2017. The next member to be revealed was Chuu on December 28, 2017 with ‘Heart Attack’ and ‘Girl’s Talk’ featuring Yves. Go Won then released ‘One & Only (Go Won)’ and ‘See Saw’ featuring Chuu and Kim Lip on January 30, 2018. Finally, the last member of LOONA to be revealed was Olivia Hye on March 30, 2018 with ‘Egoist’ featuring JinSoul and ‘Rosy’ featuring Go Won and HeeJin.


The final subunit was LOONA/yyxy with Yves, Chuu, Go Won, and Olivia Hye. They only had one album, beauty&thebeat, on May 30, 2018 with the songs ‘dal segno’, ‘love4eva (feat. Grimes)’, ‘frozen’, ‘one way’, and ‘rendezvous 18.6y’. Being the final subunit, after yyxy’s album release, LOONA finally had an official debut with all 12 members.

A Blast From the Past: Ashley McBride

    Eight years ago, in 2015, Ashley McBride graduated from Marlboro Memorial Middle school. At the present, she is 21 years old and a senior at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with ELA as her favorite subject. When she first started thinking of what job she would have later in life, she set her mind on becoming a veterinarian, and began her college career with a biology major, but eventually, she realized that that occupation did not fit her entirely, so she switched to having a major in marketing. When Ashley graduates from Saint Joseph's, she will work for Google, a notion that she is very excited about.


    Ashley's favorite teachers from MMMS were Mr. Bucci, back when he was a social studies teacher, and Mrs. Rothy, an ELA teacher who retired in or around 2020. Ashley believes that, if given the chance to redo middle school, she would have not cared so much about how people thought of her, as what they say is more related to their mood than to her actions. She advises students to always keep an open mind, stay true to themselves, and recognize mistakes as learning moments. She also believes that the current students of MMMS should take every opportunity they can, connect with their teachers, and always do what is best for them. Ashley leaves with the famous quote by Maya Angelou:


"I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."

Mrs. Hendrickson’s Interview:


Q: Did you always want to be a teacher?

A: I wanted to do a lot of different jobs while I was growing up.  When I was in middle school, I wanted to be in the Navy and become a lawyer, but then in high school I realized how much I loved history.  I also played softball my whole life and found out that I liked teaching people how to play as much as actually playing, so I decided to become a history teacher.


How many years have you been teaching?

-My first year teaching was the 2009-2010 school year.  I was a long term substitute at Marlboro Middle and here at Memorial.  In the spring of 2010, I was hired to teach social studies here full time starting in the fall of 2011, and I have been here ever since.


Why did you choose social studies? Has it always been your favorite subject?

-Social studies has always been my favorite (after phys ed).  As a student, I loved listening to the stories about the past.  As a teacher, it has given me an opportunity to teach a little of everything.  I started teaching 8th grade US History and am now really enjoying teaching the 6th and 7th grade contents.  It’s rewarding helping students make connections between the past and present.


What message do you want to give to your students?

-If there is one thing I want my students to take away from my class, it’s that we can write our own stories just like the historical figures we study.  The choices we make will define our paths, and even though some choices may be hard to make, they may be worth it in time.  I hope I can help my students write a story they can be proud of.


What job would you have chosen if teaching weren’t an option?

-If teaching was not an option, I would probably be working with a veterans’ organization helping those who have served our country.  I have a great respect for our veterans and those serving in the armed forces today, and would love to do my part in supporting them.


Why did you choose to be a teacher?

- I chose to teach initially because my sister went into teaching and enjoyed it.  She is 7 years older than me, and I always looked up to her.  Because of my opportunities in coaching softball in college, I decided to pursue the career as well and was lucky to be able to combine doing two things I really enjoy.


What is your favorite social studies unit? Why?

-I have a masters degree in Military History with a concentration in the American Civil War.  To me, that is the most interesting time period to study because there was so much going on.  The changes in our country both socially and politically for men and especially women are really significant.  There is also a lot of surviving literature from diaries to novels from that era that helps people today understand how people survived such a tumultuous time. 


What do you like to do in your free time?

-In my free time, I enjoy hanging out with my children, relaxing in my backyard, gardening, reading, and especially running.


What is your funniest school memory?

- The funniest school memory was from when the teachers used to play against the students in a basketball game the last day before winter break, and the 8th grade students would go and watch.  I am terrible at basketball but it was a lot of fun being on the court, and the students had fun watching us try and beat them.  We almost won once!  Now, we do Battle of the Quads which is also a lot of fun, and much safer for the teachers.  



Train Derailment Report

A train, which came off its tracks in East Palestine on February 3. On the train it held vinyl chloride, and many other hazardous substances. Vinyl chloride can irritate the eyes, mucous membranes, and respiratory tract, according to ATSDR or Agency For Toxic Substances and Disease Registry. Southern Ohio is now facing many lawsuits filed on the side of the residents, many of which were even forced to leave their homes because of the train crash. 

The Environmental Protection Agency or EPA, has the power to fine or sanction firms over environmental concerns, spoke Norfolk Southern citizens, who would, "pay for cleaning up the mess, and for the treachery and hardship they have had put on this community.” In other words, the Southern Norfolk are willingly to help after what they did and were looking for a way to make it up to Ohio, which seems very unlikely after what they did that could have killed thousands.

“In the aftermath of the derailment, residents of East Palestine have reported ailments including headaches and nausea, and expressed fears that local water supplies are potentially harmful despite the repeated assurances of state, local and federal officials that the water is safe. Earlier on Tuesday, the Ohio Health Department opened a health clinic for concerned residents. Authorities in both Ohio and Pennsylvania have also suggested that further legal actions may follow.Told BBC News.

A few days later at Tuesday's joint conference, Pennsylvanian Governor Josh Shapiro told his office and had referenced criminal charges against the rail firm to the state's top prosecutor, who now must make a tough decision on whether or not to press charges. 

Hours later, before the announcement, the Ohio governor and EPA chief together drank the contaminated water in a triumph to show the East Palestine community tap water was safe. Last week, Southern Norfolk had come under intense criticism from East Palestine residents after the company's representatives failed to attend a town meeting aiming at easing the fears of Ohio citizens. On Monday the company said it had already removed 15,000lbs of destroyed soil and got rid of 1.5 million gallons of contaminated or leaked water. 

Earthquake News Report

A 7.8 leveled earthquake as estimated by the U.S. The Geological Survey hit south Turkey before dawn on February 6 wreaking large areas of neighboring borders of Syria. By mid-afternoon local time Feb. 7, the Associated Press reported the combined official death tolls for Turkey and Syria had passed by 5,000 deaths and that as rescue efforts turn into recovery efforts and temperatures in the region drop, the number of victims was expected to continue rising.

Pope Francis expressed his “spiritual contact” and “unity” with those greatly affected by a pair of powerful earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria’s border on February 6th 2023.

“Pope Francis was “deeply saddened” to learn of the “huge loss of life” caused by the disaster and offered his “heartfelt condolences” to those mourning losses,” wrote Cardinal Pietro Parolin. The pope additionally prayed that emergency personnel would be sustained in their care of the injured and in the ongoing relief efforts.

According to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, “the earthquake is the largest disaster to hit the country since 1939, when a 7.8 magnitude earthquake killed more than 32,000 people and injured over 100,000. It is unclear how high the number of dead and wounded from the Feb. 6 earthquakes will reach,” he added. The Turkish president said that more than 45 countries have offered to support Turkey in relief efforts. Just a few hours after the earthquake, the Knights of Malta announced that Malteser International, their relief agency, was sending an emergency response team.

“Our local partners have an urgent need of support, especially in areas of northern Syria where hundreds of thousands of people live in simple refuges and now, with the earthquakes, are even more defenseless,” said Oliver Hochedez, “In the hospitals run by our partner organizations the number of injured arriving increases hour by hour. We must provide help rapidly.”

Chaldean Catholic Bishop Antoine Audo of Aleppo told, “There was a strong fear and now the people are in the street, in the cold and under the rain,” he said. “There is damage everywhere, even in the cathedral. The libraries are destroyed, the houses crumbled. It’s an apocalyptic situation.”

Caritas Internationalis, the church’s crisis-relief organization, immediately began a fundraising campaign for relief efforts in Turkey and Syria. The charity has been active in Turkey since 1991 and in Syria since 2011, primarily providing aid for refugees. They hope that they stop finding people dead in their country for a while because of this earthquake, after they found more than 11,000 people dead.
