Blind
By Zehra Taqvi

I know the Sun, the stars, and the sky
But I do not know how they appear
I feel the warmth of the hugs that I’ve been given
But I’ve never seen anyone who gave them
I smell the aroma of roses and daisies
But I’ll never know the color of their petals
I have heard the voices of pity when people talk about me
But I’ll never know the way their faces contort with sadness

Yet I see the poor man on the side of the road
To whom I gave my spare change
I see the clamoring of the oppressed
Whose cause I fervently support
I see the struggles of those who are excluded
Who I welcomed with open arms
I see the people who battle with their inner demons
I see their demons too

And yet…
I am the one who is blind
Am I?

The Ant
By: Andrea Waxman
When life brings you down,
When there is a lot on your shoulders,
When it feels like a boulder,
Pushing you around,
Get back up,
Because there is an ant holding the weight of the world,
And it’s still standing.
Life may not be Disney,
In fact, it makes people dizzy,
But the ant holding the weight of the world,
Thinks differently.

Friendship
 By: Zehra Taqvi
Friendship, what does it truly mean?
Is it comfort, a person on which to lean?
Does it mean to be safe, to trust someone at last?
Is it a blessing, answering the prayers asked?
Does it ever run out, or will it never exhaust?
Is it a lifelong gift, something that cannot be lost?
Does it cure all ailments, make one feel at peace?
Is it a blinding love, one that will never cease?
Does it make one feel joy, giving them a reason to be living?
Is it a wonderful honor, worth all of the effort that needed giving?
It’s an impossible question, but there is one thing that is true:
Friendship is a beautiful thing when I can share it with you.

Holiday Spirit
By: Aishika Trivedi
The sweet smell of pine fills the air as the glare of Christmas lights blinds me The shiny presents are waiting to be opened Some tiny and some large The scent of freshly baked cookies fills the air “Knock knock!” Kids begin singing to Christmas carols Laughing and gulping down glasses of thick hot chocolate Hanging by the fire are colorful Christmas stockings Everyone is asleep A jolly red man comes slipping down the chimney He nibbles on delicious cookies left for him Being ever so sneaky, he drops gifts in the stockings and under the shining tree.

VSCO POEM
By: Samridh Das
At the beginning of time
Before humans were born
Existed a woman
Who deplored
The use of the bottle
That couldn’t be a hydro flask
So in that world
You couldn’t take a chance
But later on
The world transformed
Humans reigned supreme
Melting the VSCO woman to her core
She called for her daughters
To come to this Earth
And haunt the humans
With their deadly VSCO hearts
They spawned all together
And used the forge of TikTok
To sharpen their HydroSwords
Soon these changed
From swords to flasksksksksks
And they became
An entirely different class
They called on
To a different gender known as the boys
After waiting a while
The E-Boys were deployed
Using the same method of TikTok
They became popular
Now with this newfound popularity
Nothing was stopping them
They dominated the world
With their turtle saving views
And the use of Kranken backpacks
Helped strengthen them
With HydroFlasks of the color blue
But one day
On a very dandy night
One VSCO girl took her Flask
And it didn’t even shine
This very HydroFlask
Had the VSCO girl surprised
So she left it at the Lions Pride
And said her goodbyes
Now after many months
It has landed on my hands
So I can tell you this story
That has become oh so very grand

Our Traditional Christmas
By: Anya Bandare

To roasting chestnuts on a fire.
To mum’s rum fruitcake.
To the shiny presents underneath the tree,
And spending time with family!

Do a shimmy and shake, and celebrate!
For tonight is the night before Christmas!
From Midnight Mass to staying up for  Santa Claus,
Christmas really is a magical time of year!
From putting the star on the tree,
To savagely opening presents in the morning,
      To eating a hearty breakfast,
And inviting friends and family over,
Christmas really is the best time of year!

Is Minecraft Back?
By: Dhyanam Gadhiya

Many people have heard of Minecraft, a wildly popular video game back in its prime. In fact, it is the best-selling video game of all time. This game started in 2009 and has been thriving ever since. There are two main modes: Creative and Survival.  In Creative Mode, players have access to blocks and can build whatever they want, freely.  In Survival Mode, they have to work to get those blocks, however, there are various ways in which they can die and lose everything they have built.  The game has many different things that can be done, however not all can be listed.
When the game was in the alpha stage in 2010 (back when it required a premium account), it was only available on Mac, Linux, and Windows.  Around that time, Markus Persson, otherwise known as Notch, the creator of the game, finally expanded his company and published Minecraft, Mojang. The next time it spread to new platforms was with Pocket Edition, going to Android first and then to iOS, just days before coming out on Xbox 360 in 2011.  It quickly got to 10 million accounts.  Minecraft left the beta stage in November, 2011.
In 2013, it was released on PS3, PS4, and PSVita when the exclusivity clause with Microsoft elapsed.  In June 2014, Persson was willing to sell his share of the game because he couldn’t deal with the weight of online pressure.  Activision Blizzard and EA each expressed an interest in picking up Mojang, but the company's prior relationship with Microsoft (and, presumably, a superior monetary offer) saw a deal being made.  In late 2014, Minecraft was released on Xbox One, and Mojang was sold to Microsoft for $2.5 billion.  The deal was completed on November 5, 2014.  It also marked the end of Mojang’s founders being involved with the company, as Persson, then-Mojang CEO Carl Manneh, and game designer Jakob Porser all left Mojang.  Under new leadership, but maintaining the same dev team that had driven it since Notch's original sidestep in 2011, Minecraft's expansion rolled on.  The Pocket edition was ported to Wii U, Windows 10, Samsung's GearVR, Apple TV and beyond.  By 2016, total sales for Minecraft across all platforms hit 100 million.  2017 saw the release of the most significant behind-the-scenes update in Minecraft's history: the Bedrock Engine.  Released as part of the 'Better Together' update, the Bedrock Engine brought every platform running some form of Pocket Edition, from mobile to console to Windows 10, into line with each other.
However in 2018, Minecraft was fading, and fast.  Many players stopped playing, and even those who were Minecraft’s biggest fans started to play much less.  The Minecraft community worsened, as servers were handled improperly.  Also, many useless updates were added to the game.  Many called the game “dead” (a term used to describe popular things when past their prime or heyday). Overall, the game just wasn’t the same.
A few people saw this coming (I am one of them), but 2019, which just happens to be the 10-year anniversary of when Persson started working on Minecraft, has seen a Minecraft revival.  This revival was helped by the hyped-up releases of augmented-reality app Minecraft Earth in 2020 and video game Minecraft: Dungeons, coming in April 2020.  There is also a Minecraft movie in the works which is set to hit theaters in 2022.   Also, Youtube helped Minecraft become popular in Minecraft’s heyday, and well-known YouTuber Pewdiepie is helping because he plays the game in many of his videos.
As Minecraft seems primed for another run as the world’s most-popular game, is there something crazy happening with Minecraft that could make history as players keep coming to it?  Or is it just an over-hyped nostalgia period for former players?

Is Fortnite Past Its Glory Days?
By: Dhyanam Gadhiya

Most gamers certainly have either played Fortnite or heard of it by now, as it became one of the biggest hits in the gaming world. The game wasn’t even supposed to be what it became. Epic Games had different plans, but they won’t be complaining with what they got.
They started work on Fortnite in 2011, and they were working on what is known today as Fortnite: Save The World. Fortnite: Save The World involved a big storm that went around spawning monsters and causing people to die. In the game, only two percent of people survived, and the player is one of them in an effort to save the world, as the name says. The game was delayed by various different things. Obviously, it was not great for Epic Games when this game was delayed, because without delays it may have been a finished product in 2017. As of January 2020, Fortnite: Save The World is still in Early Access, as the delays were a big part of preventing this game from being fully released.
In the meantime, Epic Games watched as Battle Royale became a big deal in the gaming world, highlighted by the 2017 rise of PlayerUnknown’s BattleGrounds, also known as PUBG. They quickly set a team to create Fortnite: Battle Royale, which, soon after its August 2017 release, became a big deal in January of 2018. This is what Fortnite is known as. The mode, free since its release, is combined with Save The World under the title, Fortnite Battle Royale. Both of them are modes in the game.
Fortnite Battle Royale became a big deal, and Save The World is in paid access, with a promise that was made in 2018 to finish the game and make it free that year that clearly didn’t go the way Epic Games predicted. They got more people to work on Fortnite, as it took over from Minecraft as the biggest game of the time. Obviously, the fact that it was free helped Fortnite, which got to 125 million registered players in June of 2018. The battle royale mode centered around 100 players jumping from a Battle Bus onto an island where they got weapons and materials and fought to the death. The storm also was a factor, coming in and harming players in the game, slowly reducing the playing field to limit the amount of time the game took.
The game also had a good community, with Twitch streamers Ninja and Myth helping make the game popular as they always had entertaining games where they were responsible for reducing the amount of players by 30%. Many people made content on the game, introducing new followers. This made the game interesting as well as the fact that people played to make sure they would be able to understand conversations with peers, as nearly everybody played.
In mid-2019, during Battle Pass Season 10, the game started its decline many predicted. This decline saw some delete the game, while others just stopped playing. Sure, it was still popular, and new players kept coming, but there was a general sense that it wasn’t the same.
Late 2019 saw the release of Chapter 2, commencing with Season 11, speculated to wrap up in 2022 with season 20. The main thing that angered players during Season 10 was taken out in Season 11, but it feels too late. Occasionally, players who stopped during Season 10 checked the game again, but many have moved on.
The game has been controversial at times, but it has also impacted the world in different ways. Sometimes it was the only topic of conversation throughout all the different phases of the game and exciting events and the downfall might just be a mere illusion. There is no doubt that Fortnite is still a top game and Epic Games fully releasing Save The World will bring Fortnite back into its prime, but is Fortnite no longer as hyped-up as it once was? Or is Fortnite just getting started?
6th Grade Trip to Frogbridge:
In September, the entire 6th grade had an early field trip to Frogbridge Day Camp. Everyone had a blast getting to know their new classmates and teachers while participating in fun activities. At Frogbridge, there were basketball, tennis, and volleyball courts, a soccer field, a rock climbing station, a gaga pit, bumper cars, bungee jumping, mini golf, a dining pavilion, and much more.
The whole ride there, the students on the buses chattered excitedly as they thought about the prospect of finding new friends and getting to know each other before the year started. When they got there, they all sat restlessly in their seats as the camp’s director explained the day’s agenda. Before the director could say “Go,” all the 6th graders eagerly sprinted off.
Everywhere at Frogbridge, students laughed and shouted as they hung out with old friends and began making new ones. Some stuck to one station, and others roamed all around in search of new games. Before they knew it, the whistle blew and lunch was served.
The students scarfed down their lunch of hamburgers and hot dogs, and eagerly went to play more games. Once again, everyone enjoyed themselves. The thing that brought them back, though, was the possibility of ice cones! And they indeed were treated with cookies, ice cones, and more drinks.
Finally, after some more time of having fun with their friends, the students gathered together so that interactive group games would be arranged. As they tromped towards the soccer field with the directors in front of them, all of them finally realized how good the day was. Many made new friends, and found some new things they liked to do.
At last, the day had to end. After being treated to ice cream cones, the students departed to their buses. All the way home, students once again talked about how successful the day was and how they would love to do it again.
In school the next day, the 6th graders realized that the visit was about more than just having fun. At Frogbridge, they suddenly eased into the idea of being middle schoolers. No one was scared out of their minds at the idea of middle school because they now gratefully embraced it. Also, no one felt left out-many had found new friends at Frogbridge.
Most of all, students thought it was an excellent start to 6th grade. Usually, field trips happen at the end of the school year. This time, though, it was at the beginning, and it set the tone for a great year to come for the new middle schoolers.

STEM Club
STEM Club teaches students about science, technology, engineering, and math. In STEM Club, students investigate how to solve problems. They can then design and test theories and experiments. For example, one such challenge is building a boat out of tinfoil that can hold 50 pennies. STEM Club is run by Ms. Hardy in room 113. This engaging club makes students really think about and analyze how the world works.

Preparing for High School
As the oldest of the school, eighth graders prepare to make their departure into high school. They say goodbye to old friends, teachers, and classmates in order to head to the high school of their choice. Students have the option of applying to a variety of high schools and academies in the Freehold Regional District or the Monmouth County Vocational School District. There are also the handful of students applying to private schools, such as Christian Brothers Academy. However, if a student does not wish to apply, or does not have an interest in any particular high school, he/she will go on to reside at the home high school, which, for us Lions, is Marlboro High School.
The application process includes various meetings that explain options that are available to the future-freshman. Most of these meetings take place at the end of the previous year (seventh grade), late September of 8th grade, and throughout most of October. These meetings consist of speakers coming into the school to inform the students about the various choices that are available to them.
The eighth grade guidance counselor speaks with students to explain what they need to do to apply and answer any additional questions. If the student decides to go to said high school, he/she must attend the open house to not only learn a bit more about said school, but also to get any more information that would be needed for applying.
For the Monmouth County Vocational School District, the applicant is required to attend the open house. At the open house of said school, a specific code is given out to each student who attends, to ensure that the student was there. When filling out the online application, the code is required to create and submit an account.
Once the online applications have all been submitted by their final due dates, applicants register for the required testing. Good luck to all 8th graders as they prepare for high school!
